During the formal groundbreaking ceremony Tuesday for the new Shawnee Justice Center, red-ribbon shovels await the digging dignitaries. The new center, located at the northwest corner of Johnson Drive and Renner Road, will include the police department, municipal court and Fire Station No. 2. Construction is to be completed by August next year.

Mad Scientist Laser Leah, also know as Leah Gunn, prepares a mixture of dry ice with water to create a bubbly fog solution pouring out of a bucket. The scientific display, held at the Shawnee Civic Center, was part of the Johnson County Library's final "Mad Science" program.
David Morris will step down as chair of the Shawnee Downtown Partnership at the end of this month. He has held this post since 2003.
