Deer numbers have mushroomed in western Shawnee, and police were concerned last week after finding signs of illegal hunting. The increase in deer numbers is readily apparent to anyone who visits Shawnee Mission Park around dawn or dusk, although park police said there has been no evidence of poaching, or illegal hunting, there. This doe skipped nonchalantly across one of the park roads a few minutes before sundown Monday.

Nine-month-old Carson Allen was a lobster ready to escape its pot Saturday after competing in the costume contest at Historical Hauntings in Old Shawnee Town. Carson, who won second place in his division, is the son of Shannon and Clint Allen of Shawnee.
Sam Azrilian has a variety of machines that help him repair all the many kinds of shoes that come into his small Shawnee store at Johnson Drive and Neiman Road. Shoe repair is one of many craftsman-oriented businesses that aren't seen as much in today's society.
