The City of Shawnee, including leaders of surrounding cities and members of the Shawnee Chamber of Commerce gathered Thursday evening to celebrate former Mayor Jeff Meyers' 12 years of leadership as mayor. To celebrate his service to the city, the Shawnee Chamber of Commerce presented him with a Charles Goslin painting. Current Mayor Michelle Distler declared Apr. 16 as "Mayor Jeff Meyers Day" and read a long proclamation summarizing Meyers' contributions to the city. Meyers was also presented with a letter from Shawnee's sister city Pittem, Belgium, thanking him for his work in strengthening the relationships between Shawnee and its sister cities around the world. Meyers thanked everyone after the presentation ceremony and told the story of a dream of his in which he was in the 'Wizard of Oz' movie, but all of the characters and events were the people he met and the experiences he had as the Mayor of Shawnee. He said, "Shawnee is my Oz, it's my fairytale." He added, "I've been very blessed. This isn't about what I've given to Shawnee, it's what Shawnee has given to me."
