The two-time defending Class 6A state champion Shawnee Mission Northwest boys track team won its first meet of the season Friday at the 38th running of the Blue Valley Relays at the Blue Valley District Activities Complex.

Diana Wood is back where she started, but it took a few years to make it back. The 1979 Shawnee Mission Northwest graduate is back as the Cougars’ diving coach for the boys swimming team.

It seems that every year there are fewer three-sport athletes at every level. At one time, there were three-sport athletes on the collegiate level. That era is long gone from the scene. Today, three-sport athletes on the high school level appear to be a dying breed. It is a problem at all high schools, but it is more of a problem at smaller schools like Maranatha Christian Academy.

SMNW runner Kirk Bado seeks bounce-back senior season

Everything was going well for Shawnee Mission Northwest cross-country runner Kirk Bado during the spring track season. Earlier that school year, he had finished fourth at the 2011 Class 6A state cross-country meet after grabbing fifth place at the Sunflower League meet. Then things went south for the now-senior runner.
