A van with a sign saying ‘Prize Patrol’ pulled up to Shawanoe Elementary Thursday, looking to give a giant check and balloons to reading teacher Marianne Gray. But Ed McMahon was not the one coming out of the van. It was members of the Shawnee Mission Education Foundation, awarding the Excellence in Education grants.
Simon-Chekhov combine plays at SM Northwest

Keli Rodgers said she was looking for a “simple” play for the Shawnee Mission Northwest Spring production. She chose “The Good Doctor.” The play was written by Neil Simon, based on the short stories of Russian dramatist Anton Chekhov as a collection of 10 sketches with a cast of 26 characters, who are each on stage less than 10 minutes.

Historical society program teaches about life in 19th century

Students at Mize Elementary had an opportunity to learn about life in Kansas 150 years ago through a traveling teaching trunk fourth-graders opened this week. Inside the trunk, students found artifacts and learning resources to teach about the frontier period of Kansas history.

A long and hard-fought battle came to an end Tuesday. Voters chose four candidates for the De Soto School Board. Complete-but-unofficial results from the Johnson County Election Office show two new members will take their positions on the board, along with one incumbent and one former incumbent. Tim Blankenship, Don Clark, Bill Fletcher and Jim Thomas received the most votes in Tuesday’s election.

Dads help for the day at Mize Elementary

Steve Hoover said lunchtime at Mize Elementary School was particularly chaotic. Watching students at lunch was part of his job last week, as Hoover volunteered for a day at the school as part of the Watch D.O.G.S. program.
